Istanbul/Chemnitz – Established in 1999, the Niners Chemnitz had never won a basketball title, neither on the national level, nor the international. It has established itself as a powerhouse in the German Men’s Bundesliga Basketball League since its debut in 2020. But still, no title to its name.

That was until April 24, 2024. And it was a nail-biter to the end to get its first ever gold title.

The Niners Chemnitz scraped by the team from Istanbul in two games to secure the European Cup Championship. Although they lost at Istanbul 105-95, their home victory a few days earlier with a score of 85-74 sealed the deal by one point. It was a total team effort that brought the title home to Chemnitz and to the state of Saxony for the first time ever. Chemnitz became the sixth German professional basketball team to win the European Cup behind Mitteldeutsche BC, Alba Berlin, Göttingen, Telebaskets Bonn and the Frankfurt Skyliners. All six of them are in the top league in German basketball.

Currently, Chemnitz is tied with Bayern Munich and Alba Berlin for the top spot in the standings. With four games left before the playoffs, the question stands whether the team, with as much confidence and energy from winning their first ever title will go for two with the German Bundesliga title? That remains to be seen in the coming weeks.

But for now the team is soaking it in with their breakthrough in their young 25 year history with more yet to come. Congratulations! 🏆🏀
