Osterwasser or Easter water is water collected on Easter early in the morning, before sunrise. It is said to have healing and protective powers and won’t go bad.
As Easter approaches, Christians around the world begin to focus on two of the central tenets of their faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Other charismatic Jewish teachers or miracle workers were active in Judea around the same time, approximately 2,000 years ago. What set Jesus apart was his followers’ belief in […]
The Flensburg Files would like to wish you and your family the best wishes for Easter. This past winter was one for the books as the warmest on record. This crocus photographed here came at the beginning of March, which was one of the earliest on record as well. Will we see an even warmer than normal year, or will it be unseasonably cooler? Will we reap the harvest or will we be in uncharted waters. One thing that is a constant variant is that family will always be the one that stands out, and one that will keep the planet together, no matter what happens. Family is always everything. ❤️
Typical of Germany, especially in the northern part, Anika Rieper of More than Beer and Schnitzel looks at the Easter Fire and Wheel, traditions which usher in the season of spring 🌼🐰🐣
It is interesting to see how blogs grow, one post at a time. Sometimes a break is needed as well. I also see how some early poems were later published again in different ways (other sites, journals, books). Some day I will put together that kind of post for this site. And we can remember, […]
The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a drifting freighter hit one of its supports; so far, six people are presumed dead. An update on the FS Key Bridge: The bridge collapse has raised several questions. Apart from the question of bridge design and the necessity of having super cargo ships, the biggest question is why the USA lack tunnels as crossings, something that Germany has more of, including the upcoming projects at Fehmarn. A look at the advantages and concerns of having tunnels as alternatives.
Good Friday or Karfreitag is the day when Jesus was crucified. Different regions in Germany have different customs associated with this day, from “Ratschen” to processions, from eating fish to eating “Struwen”.
Right in time for the Easter holidays, we have our False Friends on Friday. And this drawing I will not go any further except to say that Toll are false friends. Look at it and comment in the section below, explaining why. Hint: it can be so 🙂 or so 😦
Osterbrunnen are decorated fountains and wells that are common in Franconian Switzerland during Easter. They are decorated with colorful eggs and greenery garlands.
You will find this in central and eastern Germany, including Thuringia, Saxony and Bavaria. A look at the Osterbrunnen courtesy of Anika Rieper of More than Beer and Schnitzel.
The ship that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was also involved in an accident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016. The Antwerp port authorities said the container ship Dali hit a quay on July 11, 2016, as it tried to exit the North Sea container […]
Update on the FS Key Bridge Disaster: Two bodies were discovered in a submerged truck and the Dali, which brought down this structure, has had another incident on European soil on its record. More on that here.
