Google Arts and Culture Guide: Flensburg

A few days ago, a colleague of mine introduced me to Google Arts and Culture, an online app that belongs to the Google Family. It focuses on not only art and photography, but also on the history of certain topics, tour guides of certain places and sometimes biographies of famous people. They are written by people who have done a lot of research in their areas and want to bring it to the attention of the readers. While my discovery of the app had to do with one of my hobbies, which is historic bridges, after being introduced to the guide, I had a chance to take a look around to see how much deeper this Arts and Culture page can go.

Sure enough there were some pages on communities and other topics dealing with northern Germany, namely Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Zoom in further and one will find a treasure chest of its own. I found a page containing artwork and photos pertaining to Flensburg, along with a small paragraph looking at its history, going from the time of the Prussian-Danish conflicts to the infamous time in history during and after World War II, and then onto the time of rebuilding and a prosperous 1950s and 60s. These photos were collected over time and constructed into a collage, where one can click on the photos and look at them more closely.

The Arts and Culture Guide in general is a useful tool that can be used at anytime. One can also build a guide of its own using the app. It’s something where one can look at the exhibit, learn something new and talk about it. And even if we have some galleries of photos of big cities, like Hamburg and Lübeck (they will be featured here as well), one will find something considered small by some but important and interesting to the naked eye.
