False Friends: On the Job

In our next series on False Friends, we look at job and careers as a category. When I was doing some research, I had some doubts that there could be some categories where one could find a set of at least 10 pairs of German-English words, whose meanings are different from each other. But it turned out there are some and in this series, we look at the word pairings that deal with working environments, careers, job positions and education. In short, the ways to climb up the career ladder and enjoy a prosperous job whatever it may be. This is the fourth quiz with at least three activities for you to test your knowledge. However in this quiz, we have a pair of German-English translation exercises to train your skills in that department.

So without further ado, here is the quiz, which is divided up into four parts….

Part 1: FF or Not?  Find out whether these pairings are true friends or false friends. Correct the false friends

Part 3:  Translate the following into German using the correct word marked in bold print

  1. You must pay me the monthly rent at the end of each month.
  2. We rejected you because you lack the credentials for the job.
  3. 200 graduates received their diplomas at the college last week.
  4. The proposal presented to the public last night was met with criticism.
  5. We opened the guest house five years ago and have been greeted with kind people.

Part 4: Now do the same except from German into English

  1. Der Konzern musste einen Sparkurs einleiten und 50 Mitarbeiter entlassen.
  2. Wir arbeiten in einer familiären Klima mit flexibelen Arbeitsstunden
  3. Vielen Fabriken wurden gleich nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands geschlossen.
  4. Der Sender wird heute Abend über den Streik beim Unternehmen berichten.
  5. Wir sollten weniger Rente bekommen in den nächsten Jahren.
