This piece of lost art, submitted by Joyika, is one that serves as a remnant of World War II and a reminder of the consequences of war. It’s entitled Sniper’s Nest and it features a rifle with a telescope that has rusted away after sitting for 81 years, resting on the trees. Some had quoted that it had not been resting on the trees for that long because of its proximation above the ground. Yet it is possible that vegetation had taken over, giving the more or less out-of-use weapon that sniper look. The author had claimed the rusted gun was about 81 years old, but there is one question that is rather curious: Where was this located?
One thing is for sure, given our current conflicts we are facing: This symbolizes the consequences war and violence has on society. We are given a life as a gift. It can be taken away without notice. We have to understand why and make sure we all have a chance to make a living and leave something good for the next generation. After all, they are the ones who will thank us for it.

Hurricane Babette (or Barbette as some have called it) was one of the worst storms to have hit northern Europe, as it wreaked havoc from Scotland through Denmark towards Germany in Schleswig Holstein and Mecklenburg Pommerania. No coastal area along the Baltic and North Seas were safe.
One of the hardest hit areas were the Cities of Flensburg, Kappeln, Schleswig and Glücksburg as well as areas along the Flensburg Fjord, the Peninsula Holnis and the River Schlei. Beaches were washed away, dikes breached, roads and bike trails cut up into candy pieces, and buildings gutted- many of them ripe for the wrecking ball. An example of such destruction can be found in a column Stadtblog Flensburg. There, they focused on Holnis, which was one of our favorite summer destinations. The photos explain it all that no one can describe in any language.

Home and a far, we all have our ties to the Fjord. Whether it is your first or second home or like in our case (mine and the family), third home where we would spend our summers, this storm has affected everyone on both sides of the Atlantic as well as the far East. It’s a clear signal that Global Warming is here, but it’s an even clearer signal for us to rebuild to make it better- and safer for everyone. We all have our memories there on the Fjord. The people have our full support. Let’s make it happen and rebuild so that the next generations can enjoy what we have enjoyed in the summers we spend at the Baltic Sea. ❤

This topic starts off with a question: If you want to tell a person that smoking is not allowed, how would you formulate it in a model verb:
a. You don’t have to smoke
b. You mustn’t smoke
c. You cannot smoke here
d. You needn’t smoke here
e. You shouldn’t smoke here
All of these have to do with the verbs of necessity. Consisting of Must, Have to, Should, Need to and Can, these modal verbs looks at the degree of urgency and how they can be implemented. While can is looked at as an option and should as a recommendation, must, need to and have to are used as modal verbs of importance- as a way of saying there is no other option but to do this or face the consequences. When looking at them even more closely, these three have their own sense of urgency, as you can see in the graph on top.
They all mean the same as müssen in German. Yet when formulating them in negative, all of them have a different meaning, as you can see in the graph at the bottom.
Mustn’t and can’t can be used as a way of expressing fobbidance- it’s not allowed to do something. Needn’t or Don’tneed to has to do with playing down the necessity of having to do something, whereas shouldn’t and don’t have to basically recommends a person not to do something, but he/she can still do it, yet the latter can also work like with Needn’t/Don’t need to. In German, that means in negative form: “Sie müssen nicht.”
With that in mind, here are the following exercises for you to try out:
Exercise 2: Look at the following sentences and then formulate their opposites using the correct modal verb. Some flexibility is required when formulating the sentence. A couple examples are presented below to help you.
Example 1:
A: You must go slower than 130 km/h on the motorway. It’s the law.
ANS: You mustn’t go faster than 130 km/h
.
Example 2:
A: You mustn’t wait longer than needed to go to the hospital
ANS: You need to get/go to the hospital as soon as possible.
And now, over to you:
1.You should forget the worries about the award. If money is all that you love, then that’s what you shall receive.
2. You mustn’t driver faster around the curve than necessary. The curve is dangerous.
3. You should look at the options of us taking you to the airport instead of worrying about the bus.
4. You can smoke here even though it will not be liked by others.
5. You have to follow the truck because it is a no passing zone.
6. You can go home earlier if you are done. We have everything under control. (!: Think of working and cleaning up the restaurant after closing time)
.
Example 3: Reformulate the marked sentences with the correct modal verb.
1. It’s not necessary to register for classes. Franco has done it for you.
2. There are two options to solve this math problem: We can use the long version of the math formula or we can resort to the calculator.
3. It’s not allowed to ride your bicycle on the expressway. It’s too dangerous.
4. Beware of deer while driving! Drive slowly and use your headlights.
5. It’s urgent that we finish our project before we leave today.
6. Because of the severity of the injuries, it is of utmost importance that you go to the hospital straight away.
7. I highly recommend that you complete your first aid course right away. The next one is in a year.
8. You are obliged to tell me two weeks in advance what you want to present as a topic in class.

When asking questions involving these modal verbs, they are formulated based on the chart below:
The helping verb do is used for have to and need to when asking questions. For the remaining model verbs, the question starts with the modal verb. All answers normally end with yes or no, then the statement.
Exercise 4- AQ: Formulate the following questions to fit the answers.
No, I cannot make it to the party. I have to work
Yes, I have to make that noise! It’s my birthday and I’ll do what I want.
No, I don’t need to leave until tomorrow. My flight has been delayed for another day.
Yes we have to slow down. There’s construction
Yeah, we should have a look at the car, as the engine is making some weird noises.
.
Any questions on this topic? If not then we hope you understand the difference. And with that the answer to the question at the very beginning, when we asked how we would formulate the sentence that matches that with no smoking. It would be the following:
a. You don’t have to smoke
b. You mustn’t smoke
c. You cannot smoke here
d. You needn’t smoke here
e. You shouldn’t smoke here
Mustn’t and cannot (can’t) would fit the answer. In German, we would say “Sie dürfen hier nicht rauchen!” Keep this in mind next time you see someone smoking in an area that is not allowed!
You will thank yourself and other non-smokers for it. 😉
I stumbled across this story recently about a person who had just retired, and his son. While the son insisted that the father open an online account, the father found many reasons why it was not a necessity. One of which has to do with the need for social contact with people. And Doug Hall has a message for the readers. Enjoy the story. ❤

I had just spent an hour in the bank with my father, as he had to transfer some money. I couldn’t resist asking:
“Dad, why don’t we activate your internet banking?”
“Why would I do that?” he replied.
“Because then you wont have to spend an hour here for things like that transfer.
You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so easy!”
I was so excited about introducing him to the exciting world of online banking.
He thought for a minute, then answered “If I do that, I wont have to step out of the house?”
“Yes, yes” I said. I told him how even grocery can be delivered to your front door now, and how Amazon delivers everything!
His answer left me speechless.
He replied “Since I entered this bank today, I have met four of my friends. And I have chatted for a while with the staff who know me very well by now.
You know that I am alone. This is the company that I need. I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have more than enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.
Two years ago I got sick, The shop owner, where I buy my fruit, came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried.
When your mum fell down few days ago during her morning walk, our local grocer saw her and immediately brought his car to rush her home, as he knows where I live.
Would I have that ‘human’ touch if everything became online?
Why would I want everything delivered to me, forcing me to only interact with my computer?
I like to know the person I’m dealing with and not just the ‘seller’. It creates bonds and relationships.
Does Amazon deliver all this as well?”
Technology isn’t life. Spend time with people. Not with devices.
