The End of Society As We Know It? By Jason D. Smith

This poem was written in memory of those in Uvalde, Texas, whose lives were cut short way too early in a shooting spree which happened on May 24th, 2022. I wrote this with heavy hearts wondering not just whether we are willing to stop this maddness but if we are able to.

********

Woke up this morning and saw the news
Another shooting but nothing new.
21 people dead, 19 were children
222 shootings, all in five months
Cut and pasted but different people
Different towns but all the same.
Is this the End of Society As We Know It?

Far Away in another World
One country invades another
Killing its culture and identity
Systematically and Indiscriminately
Women, Children, no consequences at all.
With missiles, guns and torture
And threats of nukes for sure.
Is this the End of Society As We Know It?

Far away in another region
A terror group conquers the country
Women and children are put on a leash
Like dogs and donkeys and not of humans
They want to learn, grow up and be free
But any attempts of that pursuit
Are met with bullets and stones as a countersuit.
Is this the End of Society as We Know It?

Far away in another region
A country intimidates another
Claims it is not a state
With boats and missiles
And political fear
While other nations
Just sitting and watching.
Is this the End of Society as We Know It?

Far away in another region
Two countries divided for decades
Two different systems, personalities and culture
They detest each other and test their limits
With missiles and propaganda
While training the young
To follow the footsteps of the elders before them.
Is this the End of Society as We Know It?

Closer to home in another region
We have conferences about all these social ills
One person warns that World War III has begun
Another says the conflicts will impact us all
Another says we must stop the tyrants
Before they hit that big red button
Is this the End of Society as we Know It?

In our home country, our lovely home
Our politicians are aware of all this
They promise and promise
But they turn a blind eye.
They are afraid of the lobbyists
They are afraid of the threats
They are afraid for their reputation
They are afraid of change.
Is this the End of Society as We Know It?

And so back to our home
We are all covered in grief
We lost all we loved
We want it all to stop
We’ve been ignored for far too long
We’re now at the point of no return
Is this the End of Society As We Know It?

I hope it’s not the case
We have our hopes and dreams
We have our children to care for
They like us have hopes and dreams
All we want is love and peace
And an end to all this madness.
We hope it’s not the End of Society As We Know It.
