Tributes Pour In For Minnesota Sports ‘Giant’ Sid Hartman

Fellow journalists, professional athletes and sports teams, politicians and other public figures are bidding farewell to Sid Hartman.

Tributes Pour In For Minnesota Sports ‘Giant’ Sid Hartman

Sid was a household name for Minnesota and sports. I grew up reading his critical commentaries on every athlete that came to and went from my home state, from Fran Tarketon to Randy Moss, Kirby Puckett to Kevin Garnett, Lindsay Whalen to Gabrielle Grunewald. He was a critic for the decisions made by every Minnesota team. But he was a man of passion. You don’t know the whole culture of Minnesota unless you read what Sid wrote in the newspapers. Sid Hartman lived to be 100 years old, but it felt like his presence was everywhere in the sports world, even here in Europe. He passed peacefully yesterday, but not before having left his last masterpiece in the newspaper, the Star Tribune. Sid worked for over 80 years to the very end but left a legacy that will resound for another century and even beyond. It was great reading his columns but will never be able to figure out which ones were my favorites because they were all friggin good.

And so, from a Minnesotan residing in Germany and a fellow teacher and columnist to a legendary columnist, here’s to you with many wonderful memories and a big thanks. ❤ Take care and see you on the other side, fellow Minnesotan and sportsman. 🙂
